PM MITCHELL AND WICB PRESIDENT AGREE TO WORK CLOSER
Chairman of the Caricom Sub Committee on Cricket Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell and West Indies President Ken Gordon have both agreed that there must be cohesiveness among all parties interested in West Indies Cricket for the sport to move forward. During a meeting in Grenada yesterday, PM Mitchell, and the WICB President agreed to work closer together in the interest of West Indies Cricket. During the meeting the Prime Minister congratulated Mr. Gordon on his appointment and expressed confidence in the new WICB president. Prime Minister Mitchell recognised the enormous challenges Mr. Gordon would have to face but urged him to stay focussed on improving the game; strengthening the administration; enhancing the livelihood of the players and pleasing the loyal West Indies fans across the region. Mr. Gordon congratulated the Prime Minister on the recovery Grenada has made since Ivan. According to the WICB President,”some parts of Grenada look even better than they did before Ivan.” Mr. Gordon told the Prime Minister that he intended to follow through on his stated goals and would move to ensure that West Indies Cricket is improved. Mr. Gordon told the Prime Minister that he was committed to resolving the impasse between WICB and WIPA; getting the players signed on to retainer contracts; mobilising support from all Caribbean cricketing fans for winning World Cup 2007 and addressing sponsorship and funding issues. Mr. Gordon also updated the Prime Minister on the current situation regarding the impasse between WICB and WIPA. The Prime Minister told Mr. Gordon that there is an excellent opportunity now to advance West Indies cricket and both men agreed that this opportunity should not be missed. The Prime Minister also promised Mr. Gordon more support from Caricom Heads of Government. At the end of the meeting Prime Minister Mitchell said he was happy with the outcome of the meeting and is looking forward to working closely with Mr. Gordon.
