GRENAD'S FOREIGN MINISTER CALLS FOR THE CARIBBEAN SEA T...
ST. GEORGE’S Grenada: The Grenadian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Elvin Nimrod, has reiterated the call for the Caribbean Sea to be designated as a special area in the context of Sustainable Development. Minister Nimrod was at the time addressing the General Debate during the 60th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. “Our economies derive tremendous benefits from the resources of the Caribbean Sea. …..This is a contribution that we, as a people, feel strongly must be conserved, preserved, maintained and protected; not merely for this generation, but for future generations.” The Minister told the assembly that Grenada had been hampered in its efforts to achieve the Millennium Development goals due to the passage of two hurricanes in less than a year. The Minister called for the intervention of the international community with substantial financial and technical assistance to help Grenada out of the current situation. Natural Disasters was high on the list of priority areas for the Delegation of Grenada, calling for the United Nations to place disaster mitigation as a high priority on its agenda. Following his address to the Assembly, the Minister held talks with the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand who is a candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations in 2007. The Deputy Prime Minister offered technical assistance to Grenada in the areas of Tourism, Human Resource Development, Health, Agri-Business, Capacity Building, among others, and also pledged his country’s support for Grenada’s reconstruction process. It is expected that Grenada will shortly send a mission to Thailand to explore possible areas of cooperation. Minister Nimrod later participated in the Eighth Informal Consultations of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) held at the United Nations Building. The Foreign Minister is a member of the Bureau of the COFCOR and incoming Chairman. Reprinted from Caribbean Net News caribbeannetnews.com
