GRENADA GETS EARLY LEAD
CASTRIES, St. Lucia (CMC) – Grenada rushed to the top of the Windward Islands limited overs series standings with a five wicket victory of St. Lucia at the Beausejour Cricket Ground on Sunday. Chasing St Lucia’s paltry 98 in 34.1 overs, Grenada easily reached their target of 99 in 24.2 overs with the loss of five wickets. With the match reduced to 35 overs after a late start, St. Lucia struggled in their turn at the crease after being sent in by Grenada. In fact, at one stage the host country was floundering on 63 for nine before a last wicket partnership of 35 between Xavier Gabriel (29) and Mervin Charles 10 provided a late order rally. Gabriel smashed three sixes in his knock, two off leg spinner Rawl Lewis with the other coming off left arm spinner Ronald Etienne. Sergio Fedee had earlier threatened to dominate the St. Lucia innings once again, before falling for 18 while opener Ked Cadasse struck 14. Off spinner Troy Baptiste took four for 11 and Rawl Lewis, two for 22. In reply, Grenada were guided by middle order batsman Kevil George who finished undefeated on 28 while Ronald Etienne got 15 and opener Marvin Noel, 13. At the Mindoo Philip Park, the match between St Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica ended in a no-decision after rain had the final say. Batting first, SVG were dismissed for 123 in a game reduced to 45 overs because of overnight and early morning rain. Romel Currency top scored with 32 while Lyndon James (26), Roland Wilkinson (21) and Donston Andrews (17) were the other leading scorers. Mervin Matthews picked up four for 18 while Liam Sebastien grabbed two for 14 and Fernix Thomas, two for 29. Dominica never got a chance to start their run chase as rain during the luncheon interval left the outfield, especially the bowlers’ run up, soggy. Play was subsequently abandoned and the teams awarded one point each. Reprinted from sunstkitts.com
