ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION OFFICERS TO ADDRESS ISSUES REL...
Environmental Protection Officers within the Ministry of Health and the Environment, Christopher Joseph and Kelvin Dottin, today Thursday (September 29, 2005), will meet with representatives from the Ministry of Works, and Environmental Health divisions within the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, as well as community based organizations and Non-governmental Organizations in Carriacou in order to address issues related to sand mining and environmental management. As part of their visit Joseph and Dottin will meet with Mr. Earnest Joe Gibbs the Senior Environmental Health Officer for the Northern & Western districts who has been overseeing the undertaking of several environmental health projects in Carriacou and Petite Martinique since the passage of hurricane Emily. The team will visit the Tibo cemetery, and the Tibo and Grand Bay beaches, which are reportedly affected by sand mining, before meeting with the community based groups and NGO’s on the island. The highlight of the meeting will be to curb the growing problems related to sand mining and arrive at ways to better protect and improve environmental management. Discussions will also be centered around the Government’s policy on sand mining and its implications based on a recent OECS Natural Resources Management Unit case study on Sand Mining in Grenada.
