GRENADA MOVES NEARLY 30 PLACES UP IN HDI INDEX
Grenada’s ranking on the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Index has improved by nearly thirty points. In 2004, Grenada was ranked in position 93 but just one year later Grenada has moved up to 66 on the HDI list. The Human Development Index is a comparative measurement of the development of people in a country, published annually by the UNDP. It is a measurement of the level of education, literacy, Gross Domestic Product, health, and life expectancy of the people in the country. Minister of Education Hon. Claris Charles expressed satisfaction over this exceptional improvement by Grenada on the HDI ranking. Minister Charles stated that this improvement has resulted from the good performance of a Government and people that believe in strong democratic governance. Minister Charles says this improvement is particularly significant for a country which has just been ravaged by a devastating Hurricane. She says this movement is also testimony to the fact that the Government’s reconstruction plan is working. While noting that there was still a long way to go in rebuilding the country Minister Charles said that the Government and people had a lot to be proud of. Source: Office of the Prime Minister
