COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: SOUBISE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ORGA...
Click here For Photos The two well-known sayings, no man is an island and we are our brother’s keeper, help us to understand how interconnected we are. There are many in our Caribbean societies who take this connection the next step and actively work to make their corner of the Earth a better place. This time we turn our spotlight on Soubise, a fishing village in St. Andrew’s where the Soubise Community Development Organisation (SCDO) hopes to make a difference. Founded in June 2005, the SCDO’s main objective is to develop, beautify and market Soubise. While their major, long-term goal is to eventually build a Community Center to serve the needs of the area, they have started with smaller, practical and quantifiable projects including cleaning and beautifying the white sand beach. In the short-term, plans include: -Placing signs at intersections to show the different roads into Soubise (e.g. The Villa, Centipede Street, Battle Hill). -Installing a "Welcome to Soubise" sign to indicate the beginning and the end of Soubise. -Cleaning and beautification of Soubise mini-waterfall and river. -Cleaning and beautification of Soubise pasture. The groups activities are run by an active committee consisting of President: Leslie-Ann Felix; Vice President: Gregory Mark; Secretary: Debbie Charles, Assistant: Lyndonna Gilbert; PRO: Michael M. Joseph, Assistant: Joseph Charles; Treasurer: Nicholas Charles; Members: Michelle Charles, Miranda Garraway. The SCDO is a non-governmental organisation and is seeking the assistance of community members and well wishers at home and abroad to help in any and every way possible to develop and promote this beautiful fishing village.
