Influenced by the success of their initial visit to Grenada one year ago, the “Virgin Cricket Classics” has returned to Grenada from October 13 – 18, 2005 for a series of activities including a one-day limited overs cricket match involving former cricketers from the test teams of England and the West Indies.
The 22 x 20 game which will be played at Progress Park in St. Andrew is slated for Sunday October 16, 2005. This should have been preceded that same day by mini cricket tournament for children between the ages of 11 – 13, who would have been selected from Grenadian schools.
Apart from the cricketers from both teams, other members of the “Virgin Cricket Classics” will include a mix of twenty-two (22) journalists representing publications such as Good Housekeeping, OK, New Woman, Bella, Family Circle, Real, Prima, Own, Best, Closer, Chat, Now, Cosmopolitan, She, My Weekly, Home & Garden, Marie Claire, Zest, Take a Break, Now, Hello, The Irish Times, TTG, and the Sunday Mirror.
Among players confirmed to represent the former West Indies team are Joel Garner, Vivian Richards, Richie Richardson, Courtney Walsh, Roger Harper, Curtly Ambrose, Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Hayes. The former England Greats will have the likes of Allan Lamb, Emburey, Derek Underwood, Athey, John Morris, Lawrence, Capel, John Lever, and Hegg.
The general public would recall the two successful games involving these same teams that were held at the National Stadium in 2004. It is believed that the interest that was shown for those two games will also be evident for this upcoming match.
A packed itinerary has been compiled to ensure that during their five-day stay in Grenada the cricketers and journalists will have ample opportunities to appreciate the reconstruction efforts currently on stream, while also enjoying some of the activities and attractions of the island. |
