FARMING CAN BE SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS -GRENADA'S AGRI MIN...
Guyana has the land and resources and with more persons being involved in agriculture the country could produce more food and become the food basket of the Caribbean, Grenada's Minister of Agriculture, Roland Bhola told the gathering at Anna Regina, Essequibo during the observance of World Food Day. The Minister noted that Guyanese are privileged to have such resources. He said "it is high time you recognise farming as a business and if you do it in a business-like manner, you can assure sustenance for yourselves and families for many years to come," Bhola is quoted by the Government Information Agency (GINA) as saying. He also commended farmers and all those involved in agriculture for their efforts to feed the nation and for contributing significantly to the country's economic base. And in his address, Guyana's Minister of Agriculture Satyadeow Sawh said there is a bright future for agriculture in Guyana and urged all citizens to take full responsibility for developing the sector. In making reference to the theme of World Food Day, 'Agriculture and Intercultural Dialogue,' Sawh said that "today we have brought the country to a stage where we are not only self-sufficient in food production but we are a net exporter of food." Sawh also noted that agriculture has changed over the years and farming is not the same as it was ten years ago. "That is why we are pursuing a policy of diversification of our economic base within the agricultural sector," he added. According to Sawh, while focus is still being placed on the traditional sectors, special emphasis is being placed on diversifying away from the traditional crops.
