PORT OF SPAIN HIT BY FIFTH BOMB BLAST
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: A fifth bomb has exploded in Trinidad's capital, Port of Spain, the fifth in four months. The blast went off sometime between 4:45 am and 10 am on Thursday on Henry Street next to an Ombudsman’s office and opposite one of the country’s popular entertainment centre locations, the Spectacular Forum. However, no one was injured this morning when the loud explosion was heard. The island’s National Security Minister, Martin Joseph made the announcement during government’s weekly post cabinet meeting on Thursday. “A police officer on duty at the Ombudsman’s Office building which is just opposite Spectacular office heard an explosion and upon checking found a small plastic bottle with the bottom blown off and a soapy, powdery substance. No one was injured,” reported national Security Minister, Martin Joseph. This latest explosion comes as government is still investigating four other such incidents, the first of which occurred on Frederick Street on July 11, the second on George Street, on August 10, the third at KFC independence Square September 10 and the fourth, October 14 at St. James. The National Security Minister also said that the security agencies were fully engaged in finding the person or persons responsible for this latest explosion, much like those connected with the four other explosions for which persons are yet to be arrested. “We have to grab it immediately because you don’t want copycat-type arrangements to take place, you don’t want that, so it is absolutely important that those who are perpetrating this must know that the best is here to go after them. I think they underestimate the presence of the FBI head here on Tuesday,” added the national security minister. Meanwhile, government is also expected to move a motion in Parliament on Wednesday, November 9, to debate its efforts to combat crime. A report says members of government plan to embark on a massive national education programme on specific initiatives government were taking to deal with the country’s crime situation.
