NO EASE FOR WINDIES, SAYS PONTING
ADELAIDE, Australia (AFP) - Ricky Ponting is demanding that his Australian team banish the "dead-rubber syndrome" mentality as they attempt to complete a three-Test sweep over the hapless West Indies which started last night (Caribbean time). The Australians have proved themselves vastly superior to the Caribbean tourists, carrying off the first two Tests by 379 runs and nine wickets to retain the Frank Worrell Trophy. But Australia have developed a sloppy habit of not finishing off one-sided series with victories in the final Test. There is always the danger that they could take their eyes off the ball and set up Shivnarine Chanderpaul's team for an unexpected result. "A lot of our focus is almost looking ahead to the next series (against South Africa) now," Ponting said yesterday. "Although we've got a Test match to play here it's important - with stronger opposition arriving in a couple of weeks' time - that we really focus on maintaining the really high standards that we've set since we've been back from England. "I've just got a feeling that they're pretty vulnerable at the moment and it's just up to us to make sure we go there and put the pedal down as much as we can and press forward." That sentiment has been expressed before by past Australian skippers. Yet over the last four years, Australia have lost five "dead" Tests after having cleaned up the series. It would take a monumental turnaround for the West Indies to win here and most of their hopes revolve around Brian Lara, who is due for a big innings after misfiring in this lopsided series so far. "Lara has got at least one big innings in him somewhere and he hasn't had that quite yet, so hopefully it's his next Test match after this one," Shane Warne told reporters Wednesday. It's been heavy going for one of the modern-day greats with scores of 30, 14, 13 and 45. But Lara averages 61.16 in six innings at the Adelaide Oval, including 182 in his last Test here in 2000. Ponting confirmed yesterday that Australia will again go in with two leg-spinners, with Stuart MacGill to partner Warne and left-arm seamer Nathan Bracken left out. TEAMS Australia - Justin Langer, Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting (captain), Brad Hodge, Mike Hussey, Andrew Symonds, Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne, Brett Lee, Stuart MacGill, Glenn McGrath. Nathan Bracken (12th man). West Indies (from) - Devon Smith, Wavell Hinds, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Brian Lara, Shivnarine Chanderpaul (captain), Dwayne Bravo, Denesh Ramdin, Daren Powell, Fidel Edwards, Corey Collymore, Dwayne Smith, Jermaine Lawson, Tino Best.
