FAO TO HELP GRENADA'S FARMERS
ST GEORGE'S - More technical help will be soon here to help Grenada’s farmers. This news follows a meeting between Prime Minister Dr. The Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell and Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organisation Dr. Jacques Diouf. Dr. Diouf and Prime Minister discussed several issues related to Grenada’s agriculture during a meeting in Rome recently. Prime Minister Mitchell said that he used the opportunity to visit the Director General to thank him for the F.A.O.’s help thus far and also to follow up on a number of outstanding issues related to Grenada’s agriculture. Director General Diouf told Prime Minister Mitchell that the FAO would be sending four experts to Grenada to assist in the areas of irrigation, fisheries, aqua-culture, crop and fruit production and livestock production. He also informed Prime Minister Mitchell that his earlier request for funding of pilot projects would be granted and that money would soon be available for pilot projects in fisheries, and aqua culture. Prime Minister Mitchell told the Director General that this F.A.O. funding and the technical help was crucial and that farmers across Grenada would benefit from the commitment of these resources. Prime Minister Mitchell also used the opportunity to make a further appeal for assistance with the country’s school feeding programme. The Prime Minister told the F.A.O. Director General that there was an increased burden on families throughout Grenada after Hurricanes Ivan and Emily and that F.A.O. assistance in this area was greatly needed. Prime Minister Mitchell noted that the school feeding programme needed to continue and to be expanded so that more families could receive assistance. The Director General said that he was aware of the seriousness of the problem and promised tom lend some assistance. Reprinted from caribseek.com
