GRENADA WINS PRAISE AT WORLD TRAVEL MARKET (WTM) 2005  
There was so much to celebrate at this year's WTM. The week commenced with an oversubscribed ‘Spice up your Life’ event which attracted over 150 travel industry and media luminaries to the Sunborn Yacht Hotel, organized by the UK team. Senator, the Hon Brenda Hood, Minister of Tourism welcomed the new UK High Commissioner H E Mr Joseph Charter along with Sir Royston and Lady Betty Hopkin and the Secretary General of the CTO Mr Vincent Vanterpool Wallace. Minister Hood presented an update on Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique and introduced GBT’s largest ever delegation to WTM (see below). A new stand design emphasized Grenada’s wonderful foliage incorporating blooms brought up from the island and arranged by five times Chelsea gold award winner, Suzanne Gaywood. The new 20,000 seat National Stadium featured prominently, marking Grenada’s award of the ICC Super Eight matches. The Minister attended the WTM VIP Opening Ceremony and Reception, along with a variety of ministerial meetings on the ICC World Cup Cricket and Sustainable Tourism. Head of Marketing, Mrs. Naline Joseph and Chairman of the Grenada Board of Tourism, Mrs. Joslyn Sylvester- Gairy held a number of meetings with tour operators, press and travel writers. The opportunity was utilized to update the travel trade on Grenada’s progress and rehabilitation process post-hurricane. Destination Grenada celebrated the fact that by the end of 2005, 90% of the hotels would be operating fully. This includes the Spice Island Beach Resort, which reopens in December 2005. Two new products were showcased; River Tubing and the Agro-Tourism Attraction – Balthazar Estate and Botanic Gardens. The opportunity was taken to re-emphasize Grenada’s rich diversity by highlighting activities such as diving, weddings & honeymoons along with the flora & fauna. The GBT delegation was interviewed by the UK’s leading travel trade publications including Selling Long Haul, Travel Weekly and ABTA Magazine, as well as a number of consumer journalists. They also attended meetings with British Airways, Excel Airways/Golden Caribbean and Virgin Holidays. In 2005, a record number of meetings were held with over 40 tour operator companies.
