GRENADA OPPOSITION CONDEMNS GOVERNMENT MOVES
ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada (CMC) – Grenada’s Opposition Leader, Tillman Thomas, has accused the ruling New National Party (NNP) government of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell of attempting to provoke a constitutional crisis and undermine the democratic process in the country. Thomas has been reacting to the circulated Order Paper for Friday’s sitting of Parliament in which the Leader of Government Business, Gregory Bowen, has filed a resolution for the Speaker or another person appointed by the House to enquire into the citizenship of sitting members of the Parliament who won their seats in the 2003 General Elections. The NNP has maintained its call for opposition parliamentarian Peter David to resign over allegations that he is a citizen of Canada and has held Canadian Citizenship since 1992. Last month, Attorney General Elvin Nimrod and Special Advisor to Cabinet, Hugh Wildman, said that the seat held by David should be declared null and called for a by-election. David has since confirmed that he has Canadian citizenship but denied violating the Constitution of Grenada. However, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) said that the matter should be clarified in the court. He said the resolution makes no mention of the status of those who may have been sitting in our Parliament years before as American citizens. He said if the NNP Administration wanted to have a provision of the Constitution interpreted, the proper forum is the court not the Parliament. NDP officials say the Mitchell government is hoping to use Parliament to get vital information before proceeding to court. NNP’s Public Relations Officer Kennedy Roberts said court documents were being prepared since they are confident that Mr David has violated the constitution of Grenada.
