GRENADA NOT YET READY FOR CSME COMPLIANCE
Grenada says it will not be ready for the January 1, 2006 implementation of the Caribbean Single Market but is working towards full compliance by the first quarter of 2006. Minister for International Trade, Elvin Nimrod, said while Grenada has substantially complied with its obligation under the treaty for the implementation of the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME), it is still short of two pieces of legislations. Caribbean governments regard the CSME as a suitable response to the changing global environment that has resulted in the loss of preferential treatment for the sale of regional goods, products and services on the global market. The CSME will allow for the free movement of goods, service, skills and labour across the region. Mr. Nimrod said Grenada had requested an extension for full compliance at the recent CARICOM-Cuba Summit in Barbados. Reprinted from radiojamaica.com
