GRENADA'S ROBERTS FIRES WIGAN INTO HISTORY BOOKS
LONDON, England: Two goals from Grenadian international Jason Roberts led his English Premier League side Wigan to an historic win in the Carling Cup Tuesday night at the JJB Stadium. Roberts' first-half double fired the Lactics into the history books, as they reached their first-ever major cup competition semi-final by defeating Ricardo Gardener's in-form Bolton Wanderers 2-0. "It is a really great achievement for us to be in the semi-finals, absolutely brilliant," the striker told BBC Sport after the game. "It'll be my first one but we have to focus on the Premiership for now." Looking Forward to Semis In their 27-year existence as a League club, Wigan have only appeared in two prior semi-finals, the Freight Rover Trophy in 1985, which they went on to win, and the Auto Windscreens Shield six years ago, and Roberts wants to continue. "It's a great opportunity for Wigan and both legs will be great occasions. But we know whoever we play will give us two very hard games at this level," he said. "It's a real nice feeling to progress and to beat our rivals, we're all well happy with that. "Ever since I've been here we've been writing new chapters of history for this club and we've continued to do that." Roberts also took the opportunity to praise his teammates for their efforts, while keeping it cautious. "The boys played really well, there were some good individual performances. We worked really hard and I think we deserved the win. "There's a long way to go and there are still some very good sides left, but we will enjoy this before we get back to normality in the Premiership." The joy of Roberts' double Despite seeing less of the ball in the first-half, Wigan managed to take the lead in what was their first shot on target. Clever passing movement between Alan Mahon and Andreas Johansson sent Roberts on goal from the latter's through ball in the 40th minute. The forward then skillfully turned Ben Haim prior to drilling the ball low and hard from ten yards past goalkeeper Jussi Jasskelainen, which sent the 13,401 cheering home supporters to their feet. Five-minutes later the Grenadian striker capitalised on a dreadful mistake by Radhi Jaidi to score his second goal of the night and double the Latics' lead, after Mahon took advantage of a dozy Ricardo Gardener. "It was definitely nice to get back amongst the goals," Roberts said. "I've been playing okay and doing my best for the team every time but I'm a striker and I love scoring goals and it was great to get a couple. "The whole team played well really, I thought it was a good performance and Lee McCulloch was outstanding, he caused Bolton all sorts of problems."
