A FANTASTIC BUILDUP TO CHRISTMAS IN MT. HORNE
by Wallace J.A Exclusive to Grenadianconnection.com The residents of Mt. Horne inside of big parish, St. Andrew’s, were in for a great Christmas this year. There was a nice buildup during the week immediately preceding Christmas and many of the residents in the area were heard openly suggesting that they were "feeling" the Christmas spirit this year. This has to be viewed against the background that they are trying to recover from two extremely disastrous hurricanes, one of which (Ivan) would have undoubtedly dampened Christmas celebrations last year. On Wednesday December 21, the management and staff of SAC 88.1FM (St. Andrew’s Connection), now located in Mt. Horne, had a Christmas tree lighting in front of the radio station. The function was well attended by adults and children from Mt. Horne and the surrounding villages. In addition to the Christmas tree lighting, there was live music to dance to and performances from various artists. The children under the age of 8 were given toys and educational materials from the management of the station. On the following day, Thursday December 22, the Mt. Horne Cricket Ground also came alive. Former national cricketer, Starlen Romain of Mt Horne, got into the Christmas spirit and used his initiative to organize a Christmas get-together for the residents in the area. There was a Christmas tree lighting at the pasture followed by the distribution of toys to the children in the community. Finally, food and drinks were given out to the many residents who were in attendance. These two activities not only put Mt Horne residents in a positive frame of mind to enjoy the Christmas season, but contributed significantly toward the building of a stronger community spirit within the village. It is hoped that community leaders can continue to build on this level of co-operation that was seen during these activities and harness the energies of the residents in the village to continue to develop the area. A "mini-stadium" is already under construction in the area and the future does seem bright for the people of Mt. Horne and the surrounding areas.
