GRENADA STILL NOT FULLY RECOVERED FROM HURRICANE BATTER...
Grenada's Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell, is warning citizens that the country still has a long way to go in its rehabilitation efforts following the destruction caused by two hurricanes over the past two years. He said the journey of rebuilding the country had just begun despite the generous contributions from both local and foreign aid donors. While lauding the efforts of some of the country's citizens whom he says have undergone tremendous personal sacrifice to help rebuild Grenada, Dr. Mitchell criticised the lack of effort by others. He made an appeal for a united effort, and pledged that his government would also attempt to provide more assistance to the needy in the New Year. Dr. Mitchell also called for an end to what he described as bitterness, envy, and malice and the need for all citizens to embrace peace, love, happiness and forgiveness. The Prime Minister's appeal comes in the wake of his administration’s frantic bid to avoid a major confrontation with trade unions on the island over the planned implementation of a five per cent levy on workers' salaries. The Grenada Trades Union Council (TUC) has given the government an ultimatum of December 31 to withdraw the levy or face a month of protests in January. The Keith Mitchell-led administration says it cannot entertain the TUC’s request. Reprinted from radiojamaica.com
