A CALL FOR GREATER SELF RELIENCE CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY...
Grenada’s acting Prime Minister Nazim Burke has called on his countrymen to develop a culture of self reliance and to shoulder “full responsibility for our actions, for our future and for our destiny.” The acting Prime Minister made the call while addressing activities celebrating Grenada’s 38th Anniversary of Independence in Petite Martinique on January 30th and in Carriacou on January 31st. The theme of this year’s celebration is Breaking all Barriers, Striving for Greater Achievement, Under One Flag. Mr. Burke told the residents, in his speech “we must develop the capacity and determination to seek and extract from within our own circumstances and environment, the resources, opportunities and energies we require to advance as a nation”. In outlining some of Grenada’s achievements, the acting Prime Minister also said “we have peaked the world’s attention and gained admiration as a world player in athletics with two finalists and a 400M world champion in Kirani James.” He praised the revitalization of Grenada’s agricultural sector, growth in the number of Grenadian cricketers who have served on the West Indies team and the “foresight and boldness” of the father of Independence, Sir Eric Matthew Gairy, for the setting up of the St. George’s University. “For these and other strides that we have made as a country over the past 38 years, we must be thankful,” Mr Burke, who is also the Minister of Finance, Planning, Economy, Energy and Cooperatives, said. The acting Prime Minister concluded that the Independence theme should “motivate us to look for new frontiers and become pioneers in a period of economic difficulties and global uncertainty. Four available avenues through which this can be achieved were identified, including the richness of our land, the uniqueness of our heritage and the resourcefulness of our people.

A CALL FOR GREATER SELF RELIENCE CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY...
Kudos to you Mr. acting PM Nazim Burke. This is the moment we need in order for us to consider Grenada an independent state or country. Independence state means that our country is either self reliance or moving in that direction, not subjected to the control of a foreign power or entitiy. As we look back at the 38 years of what we term Independence, can those of you who celebrartion such a milestone honestly and confidently say Grenada is an idependent state? What evidence is there to pinpoint that we have achieved such ideal? have we achieved anything substantial: social, economical, political, cultural, judiciary...to negate the celebration of independence? I Strongly support the Nazim Burke's plea to the nation. If we as local citizens see no need to become self sufficient and independent, how then can we expect the country to achieve self sufficeincy? Our country's growth must first begin in everyone's very home. Charity begins at home!
