ST. JOHN’S – 14TH FEBRUARY, 2012 – Grenada’s premier track and field club, SpeedZone, is the recipient of 13 pairs of top-of-the-line spikes, compliments Kmannie Mathlin-Dan, a Grenadian from the town of Gouyave, who currently resides in Taiwan. This donation from Mr. Mathlin-Dan came on the heels of the club receiving its long-awaited uniforms - enough for 60 athletes. Like the majority of the spikes, the uniforms consist mainly of the clubs colours: orange and white, and would be worn for the first time at the 2012 National Champs, which is carded for Saturday, 18th February, 2012. Speaking on behalf of the club was Ms. Reece Sam, Marketing & PR Consultant. She said, "Our club consists of athletes from a number of primary and secondary schools, most parishes and Carriacou. A lot of them train without shoes, and do not have proper - or any - training or running gears. We are faced with this situation every day; and, as a club, we try our best to raise funds and provide out-of-pocket assistance. This donation, to say the least, is very motivating to the athletes, coaches and organisers. We will continue to push on." Also, speaking to Mr. Albert Joseph, the Club's Vice-President and IAAF-certified Elite Coach, he expressed profound gratitude to Mr. Mathlin-Dan for the donation. "This is a rather heart-warming contribution; and, there isn't enough words to adequately express our gratitude. Although, our ever-growing membership is more than the quantities of uniforms and spikes now in hand, it is far more than we have ever had or received from any individual or group. We are particularly grateful to Mr. Kmannie Mathlin-Dan for this timely donation, and to all other contributors, as we head into the 2012 National Champs and other events." These donations were made possible through the logistical assistance of Shannel Peters-Dior and Tasheba Mathlin-Sam - other overseas Grenadians from Gouyave; the Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Sports with concessions on duties; Wayne Nimrod - a resident of Gouyave who cleared and transported the gears, free of charge; and, the club's organising committee, including, Quincy Jones and Coach Jimmy Mathlin. SpeedZone's Annual Invitational Meet will be held on Saturday, February 25th at the Cuthbert Peters Park in Gouyave.
