GRENADA OPPOSITION CONCERNED ABOUT RAPIDLY INCREASING U...
ST GEORGE’S, Grenada - Members of the opposition continue to express serious concerns about the rapidly increasing rate of unemployment in Grenada. Since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumed office, the unemployment rate has grown steadily from just over 20% in 2007 to over 40% in 2012. Leader of the opposition, Dr Keith Mitchell, said he is extremely concerned over the growing numbers of ordinary Grenadians who have been laid off from several well-established businesses across various sectors in recent weeks. This, he said, is a reflection of the terrible state of the economy, which continues to deteriorate as a consequence of the faulty economic policies of the government and its refusal to put mechanisms in place to address the country’s economic woes. According to Mitchell, the significant job losses and salary cuts in recent weeks are having far-reaching implications for many families island-wide. He said more and more families are unable to meet their financial obligations resulting in the loss of several homes, lands, and vehicles. Additionally, many are unable to provide the basic needs for their families such as food. While the opposition said it understands the need for businesses to restructure their expenses, members strongly believe that government has a responsibility to put structures in place to ensure that the environment and economic conditions are suitable for doing business. The mismanagement, political instability and faulty economic policies of the government have failed to achieve this. The opposition therefore called on the government to take urgent action to address the growing unemployment situation in Grenada since, if it continues to increase, the country will face severe social, political and economic consequences.

Gabe, whenever it greatly help if you would simply address the issue. Since we-Grenadians are still influenced by the colonial and slave mentality of being reliant on others to do for us rather than do for ourselves, I would suggest strong leadership is what it's going to take us beyond the ever increasing unemployment. Government must pay more attention to our main revenue driver-agriculture...it's the base of employment which provided jobs for most of our people in the 70s...we have allowed one government to another to focus their attention on tourism and import while neglecting agriculture. Tourism is season and does not provide a safety net for a stable economy, especially when there is a global crisis. Tillman Thomas as well as Keith Mitchell are both to be blame for the dependency on imports than local products. When Grenadians would rather choose to buy bio-influenced-genomed chicken, potatoes, tomatoes, milk, etc. simply because it's American or chinese imports than locally produced products, then something is wrong here. But we can't blame the consumers. We have got to hold our political leaders fully responsible. If a high tariff is placed on imported products that are locally grown, then that would level the competition playing field and give our local farmers a chance to compete.

Marilyn good morning and welcome to the forum and it is great to hear someone saying thngs that is dear to my heart, yes the current un employment level here is unacceptable and the high number of unemployed persons we currently have here in grenada and therefore government, the private sector, local communities and schools should put their heads together and find a way of re-educating our people and the country as to what is really going on in terms of the current global economical financial climate world wide which has a major impact on small islands states like country and yes you are quite right to say that here in grenada previous government has in the past nejectled our agriculture industry and has forsaken our tried and tested policy of home grown - EAT WHAT YOU GROW -and then export in favour of major imports and investment in the tourist industry and the result is an unacceptable unemployment rise especially within our agriculture industry which is noticable especially the youths in our country.

I read the above article and it is quite unfortunate to see such high unemployment in the country. This for strong action the main resources are agriculture and we are not focusing on enough . The whole country has bend our backs toward eating what grow and exporting the excess. Grenada is bless Counrty utilized our resources and make our counrty proud . To those who are unemployed do not resort violence stop steeling , respect elderly people do not go robbing elderly folks with halloween mask.To law enforcement do not be discourage do the best you can .God bless Grenada .
