GRENCAP MOBILIZING ASSISTANCE FOR HURRICANE VICTIMS
NEW YORK, November 2, 2012 The Grenada Consulate and GRENCAP United, the umbrella body of Grenadian organisations in New York, are mobilising assistance for Grenadian nationals affected by Hurricane Sandy. On Saturday an effort will be made to assist nationals who felt the brunt of Hurricane Sandy which battered the Tri-State on Monday. The executive of GRENCAP met on Thursday and activated its Disaster Relief Committee to address the needs of those severely affected. The meeting, which was facilitated by the Grenada Consulate, has agreed to mobilise brigades of volunteers who will canvass areas affected by Sandy. “Together with the Consulate, we will be pooling skills, finances, and any other resources together to assist those most affected at this time,” said Merle Clarke, Public Relations Officer of GRENCAP. Some affected families especially in Southern Brooklyn have reached out to the Consulate requesting information about assistance for their flooded homes. The volunteers will assemble at 9902 Avenue J and 99th Street in Brooklyn at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. A public meeting to discuss assistance is also scheduled for Sunday at Holy Cross School at 2520 Church Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. City and State officials are expected to attend this meeting which starts at 4:00 p.m. “We are bringing together people who could provide useful information for victims of Sandy including home repairs,” said Consul General Derrick James. The Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique United (GRENCAP) is a grouping of more than 50 Grenadian organisations based in New York. GRENCAP has spearheaded many social activities in New York including the annual Grenada Day Festival in Brooklyn. Individuals who want to get involved in the effort are encouraged to call (212) 518-7057
