CARRIACOU CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF GRENADA’S INDEPENDENC...  
Citizens of the tri-island state of Grenada are being urged to find more creative and innovative ways of surviving by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Legal Affairs, Labour, Local Government and Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs Hon. Elvin Nimrod. Addressing people in attendance at the 40th anniversary celebrations of Grenada’s Independence at the Hillsborough Recreation Grounds recently, Minister Nimrod noted that independence must be viewed as a journey rather than a destination. He called on all to examine the benefits, challenges and burdens faced the country faced from since 1974. Governor General Her Excellency Dame Dr. Cecile La Grenade in her first independence address to residents here made reference to the island’s first Olympic champion Kirani James and asked that citizens rededicate themselves to their communities ; as every citizen has a part to play in the development of the nation. Several persons were honoured at the celebrations; they included the owner of Hotel Laurena George Andrew for his contribution to business development, 14 year old cricketer Emmanuel Stewart for his contribution to sports and calypsonian Shortpree for contribution to culture. Recognition was also given to Constable #861Devon Cudjoe for his outstanding work in the area of policing. Meanwhile, a cultural evening showcasing the different aspects of Carriacou’s culture such as big drum dancing and quadrille formed part of the activities observing Grenada’s 40 years as an independent nation on the sister isle.
