Forty years of the tri-island state independence from Britain was celebrated on the 586 acres island of Petite Martinique. Governor General Dame Dr. Cecile La Grenade; whose maternal grandparents originated from the island; joined with residents to celebrate such an important milestone in the nation’s history. The day’s event included a parade through the streets which was led by members of the Royal Grenada Police Force and students of the Petite Martinique RC School who were adorned with their national colours; a ceremony followed at the lone school on the island. In her remarks Her Excellency highlighted the progress made on the island in terms of its road network and said the island is poised for other major developments. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Labour, Legal Affairs, Local Government and Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs Hon. Elvin Nimrod in his remarks said that citizens need to examine the benefits and challenges the nation endured from 1974. And, as government seeks ways to enhance its revenue, Minister Nimrod noted that with a small and vulnerable economy there is a limit as to how much government can tax its people; therefore there is the need to work together so the nation can grow positively. During the celebrations three (3) community persons were awarded: Matthew Blair good corporate citizen, Kayon Roberts for his contribution to community and youth development and Cecilia St. Ignac for her contribution to culture. Constable #741 Christopher McEwen attached to the Petite Martinique Police Station was recognized as the most outstanding police officer on the island. Students who participated in the annual Independence Road Race were also presented with trophies. Also attending the celebrations were Parliamentary Secretary Senator the Hon. Jester Emmons, Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs Gertrude Niles and Permanent Secretary with responsibility for Local Government Bernadette Lendore-Sylvester and Personal Assistant to the Minister Albert Fortune.
