GRENADA TEACHERS PROTEST FOR BACK-PAY TO CIVIL SERVANTS...
The Grenada Union of Teachers (GUT) Wednesday said it was pleased with the response of its members to the first wave of protest action to force the Keith Mitchell government to pay arrears to public servants. “Today, we have seen good response to the call and we expect better tomorrow,” said GUT president Lyon Lewis, of the teachers who wore red arm bands and or union T-shirts. Last month the government said it was unable to pay as schedule the EC$12 million (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) in retroactive payment to public servants. The government said that while the process of preparation for payment is almost completed, it was “mobilizing external funding which has not yet arrived”. The third instalment of the retroactive payment to public officers, teachers, prison officers was due to be made on Friday and the statement said that all unions and welfare associations have been informed of the situation. “The total cost of this instalment of retroactive payment is $12 million. This third instalment will bring the total retroactive payment to $30 million with Government having paid $18 million in 2013,” a government statement said, adding that an update will be made on March 17 as to when payment would be made. But the GUT said that the government’s approach compromised its membership, and was demanding that payment be made by March 12. “If it’s not done by that time we will definitely heighten our process,” said Lewis who claims that government has not met with his union executive or membership to explain the issue of the non-payment and when it will be resolved. Last month the government said it was urging trade unions to accept a three-year wage freeze as it seeks to enter into an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to deal with an ailing economy. Meanwhile, a statement from the Government Information Service (GIS) noted that since coming to office a year ago, the Mitchell administration has made two sizeable payments to public officers; honoured the six per cent increase in salaries and still managed to pay salaries on time despite the financial situation facing the country. “In light of this, and with the understanding that the first quarter of every year is marked by its own fiscal limitations, the Government has had to request the indulgence of the public workers in accepting a revised schedule for the third payment instalment,” said the statement issued on Wednesday. Apologising for the delay, the statement said some members of the trade union movement have expressed disappointment that they were not informed earlier. “Government understands and accepts that reaction. It was remiss of us, and for that we apologize,” the statement added. Source: ja observer

GRENADA TEACHERS PROTEST FOR BACK-PAY TO CIVIL SERVANTS...
Kayak, where do you get this big island term from? Grenada, Carriacou & Petit Martinique are all very small islands. Why are you trying to separate three little islands? Please don't do that. I also know Grenadians including myself who would love to work with the Administration for the good of the Tri Island. However this does not mean anyone should not add his or her 2 cents like GC states. Separating big and small will do us more harm than good. A people united can never be divided. Lets keep united.

Once again there is the smell of something rotten in the air in Grenada, first there was the Man bro Chester H. (the Political any Horse Rider)who has deserted his Members for a cushy roll within Government, now behold the bro Lyndon has gone and done the same thing leaving the poor Teachers in limbo in a leaderless situation at the time when he is most needed by them, again for the lure of a political Knighthood in the senate,Lord is that what our people voted for a year ago, Lord where is our current Leaders in Grenada taking us ,oh how sad our voters did not take hid then and look at the bigger picture on that fateful day in February 2013 ,oh if they had just listen, ask questions, challenge those who come before them asking for their votes ,yes we were warned as to those Deceivers promising to Rescue and Deliver us from the Tillman Pain, now today we have the KCM Game with more Pain and no Gain with the Rescue Train stuck in the IMF Lane Delivering more Pain. Lord help our little Grenada and our People from this sorry bunch calling themselves POLITICANS.

Lynn, I agree although there are many Grenadians who didn't vote for him. I always wonder what the hell the voters were thinking. The guy was in power for three terms and created a Financial mess. Grenada didn't make progress under him. Yet voters thought Santa Claus will bring gifts right away since the NDC couldn't deliver in four years.
