NEW GRENVILLE MARKET SQUARE DRAWING NEAR—BHOLA
“While I cannot give you an exact date, I can tell you that we are drawing close to seeing [the market] in full operation,” were the comments from Agriculture Minister Hon. Roland Bhola, as he responded to a vendor from St Andrew’s Southwest, during the Constituency Forum, at Gordon’s Bar in Munich, St Andrew’s. The female vendor expressed her displeasure at the time it was taking to complete the new market square, which has been ongoing for years. She said that vendors are being faced with a serious challenge since they are being heckled and harassed by the police, who do not want to see vending on the streets. Minister Bhola added that it is the vision of the government to have progressive vending facilities, not only in Grenville; but right across the country in the various parishes. He indicated that the completion is taking longer than initially planned because they also decided to build the Bus Terminal, to take the buses off the street and to provide more room. The Agriculture Minister assured vendors that the new facility would soon be completed and commissioned. “We have some remedial work happening and people are on the ground ensuring that those who have been vending, as market vendors, get the first preference in an attempt to ensure that they are above board in the distribution of the vendor stalls.” Bhola noted that they are faced with the problem of limited booths. He said that they are taking a systematic approach in the distribution of the booths in an attempt to be fair and transparent and to provide vendors with a first class environment to ply their trade. “We know the urgency; we know that where you are is not best suited for you; so we are going, in the very near future, to come up with a system to make sure that fairness is involved and that people get the opportunity, first and foremost the vendors, and later the clothes vendors.
