LIME TO HELP GRENADA GOVERNMENT ROLL OUT TABLETS-IN-SCH...
Telecommunications provider, LIME, has offered to help Government roll out its tablets-in-school programme likely to get underway in September. LIME made the offer during a meeting involving executives of the company and Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell on Tuesday. The programme, ultimately aimed at expanding the role of science and technology in improving the local economy, was announced by Prime Minister Mitchell in the 2014 budget presentation. Already, LIME has made its pitch, and has subsequently been engaged in discussions with Ministry of Education officials. Once a cost effective agreement is reached, the tablets are expected to be installed in time for the new school year, beginning in September. The overarching tone of the meeting, and a point heavily emphasized by Prime Minister Mitchell, was one of collaboration to explore ways to provide cost-effective service to our citizens. Prime Minister Mitchell underscored that Grenadians are “already burdened with high rates on electricity, telephone, and other basic services; therefore, Government will continue to make adjustments to ease that burden.” Upon assuming office, Government immediately embarked on new arrangements with different service providers that resulted in significant costs reduction and savings on telephone services across ministries. The LIME executives assured the Grenadian Leader that the company is focused on finding technological solutions to address mobile telecommunications rates in the Caribbean. They are now discussing the way forward with Minister with responsibility for Communications, Hon. Gregory Bowen and Hon. Alvin Dabreo who has responsibility for ICT. LIME’s representatives in the meeting included Mr. Phil Bentley, CEO of Cable & Wireless Communications; Niall Merry, Chief Operations Officer (COO), Ms. Geraldine Pitt, (CEO) South Cluster LIME; and Mr. Angus Steele, General Manager of LIME Grenada.
