Olympic 400 metres champion Kirani James will lead a Grenada contingent to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to August 3.
James is included in a 16-member team which will participate in three sporting disciplines—Athletics, Boxing and Swimming—announced by the Grenada Olympic Committee.
The Grenadian quarter-miler holds the Commonwealth Youth Games’ record of 46.66 set in Pune, India, in 2008.
James has won titles in most of the major championships including CARIFTA Games, Pan American Junior Championships, World Youth, World Junior, Commonwealth Youth Games, World Championships and Olympic Games.
His target in Glasgow will be Iwan Thomas’s 1998 400m Games record of 44.52.
James will be joined by fellow quarter-milers Bralon Taplin, Rondell Bartholomew and Payton Hazzard; Joel Redhead, Paul Williams and Michael Wilson in the sprints and Kurt Felix and Lindon Victor in the Decathlon.
Kanika Beckles is the lone female track athlete and she will compete in the 200 and 400 metres.
The team also included two boxers—Imrod Bartholomew (middleweight) and Jonathan Francois (welterweight) and four swimmers—Oreoluwa Cherebin, Andrew Hopkin, Corey Ollivierre and Chris Regis.
Grenada’s lone Commonwealth Games medal is silver won by Alleyne Francique in the men’s 400 at the 2006 Games in Melbourne, Australia.

Brothers and Sisters of our beautiful islands Grenada and her Sisters Isles it is time we all wake up and reclaim our beautiful country back from these Nnp Dictators,i say so because it is now beginning to feel that Mitchell and his band of like minded devils trully believes that our country and her people belongs to them to do and say as they like,now take for example that CPL cricket match over the last couple of days with very Poor attendance,they had to give away free ticket to make the crowd up and still the crowd did not come, and the final cost of staging such will once again be put on the heads of our already over burdened tax suffering country men and women, a burden once again bestored upon us simply to feed the egoes of Mitchell and his like minded friends,brothers and sisters grenada is broke so say the Doc himself , people were asked to take a hair cut,a pay cut,pay higher Taxes,the lost of the free christmas barels,the sackings of several hard working experience civil servants ,bank workers,etc and after all this yes kcm and his croonies decided to borrow more monies from whom no one knows to put on this CPL game simply because his friends claims that he is a lover of cricket that may be so but why did he and his like minded friends dig into their pockets and finance such from their wealthy pocket and not at the expense of our already poor suffering people,and to rub salt into the wound free tickets was handed out as bribery to so called supporters ,but here is the reality of all this our olympic heroes will soon be embarking on their way to Scotland for the coming Commonwealth Games,will Kcm and his croonies be dipping into their pockets to assist our brother and sisters who will be partaking in these games,will his government make sure that proper accomadations is afforded to our heroes while in Scotland representing our country at these Commonwealth Games ,Mr Mitchell you are a man who likes to Talk the Talk but is poor on delivery now lets see you do something for Grenada and not for your Egoes because it is time for you to Man Up for Grenada.
