GRENADA CONSIDERING FINING RESIDENTS FOR MOSQUITO BREED...
Grenadian authorities are considering the reintroduction of Mosquito Destruction Act of 1952 to deal with the breeding of mosquitoes in light of a significant number of people suffering from the Chikunguyna virus. Chief Environmental Health Officer, Andre Worme, said the Ministry of Health is looking at the previous Act, which had been enacted during a period when there was an intense eradication programme in the Caribbean. The legislation sought to encourage people to apply proper environmental hygiene practices in an effort to reduce the mosquito population, thereby reducing the incidence of dengue which was prevalent at the time. “Years gone by we have seen a gradual abrogation and a moving away from the enforcement mechanisms and we thought that with the current threat of Chikungunya, it is important for us now to bring greater awareness to this possibility that persons can be prosecuted for infringement of this piece of legislation.” The Mosquito Destruction Act provides for a fine of EC$250 (1 EC dollar =US$0.37 cents) for first time offenders found guilty by the court of having on their properties, containers of water with mosquito larva in them. Repeat offenders will be charged EC$500. According to Worme, once the decision is taken to begin the enforcement of the legislation, it can be done by Health Officials applying directly to the court or through the police prosecutorial system. In the meantime however the Ministry is on a sensitization drive to make people aware of the existence of the legislation. “Although we know the adage that ‘ignorance of the law is no excuse’, we still wanted to ensure that persons become aware of the problem and this piece of legislation, prior to taking more serious enforcement action.” He said the Ministry can begin enforcing the law within the next two weeks. Earlier this week, medical practitioner here said that the Chikungunya virus had reached epidemic level and urged the population to dispel the myth that the disease is spread by other means except the aedes egypti mosquito. Dr Francis Martin said the virus has reached epidemic proportions with close to 60 per cent of the population manifesting symptoms which he said could be linked to the fact that people are refusing to accept that the virus is spread by the mosquito. Please let it be known that this post is not to alarm anyone, it is just an observation and my question is that ever since the outbreak of this dreaded virus Chick-v-G.there has been a major increase in the death toll here in Grenada, yes i am aware that a MOH (ministry of health) spokeperson recently claimed recent poll showed that this virus is decreasing ,but was poll meant to keep the Tourist industry and our people quiet, also have our medical professionals yes those who certifies the cause of death in this cases (doctors) to the families of the decease ? and what percentage of these current death rate is of the Virus related or are we still living in ignorance. MOH and the minister responsible for the health care and well being here in Grenada, i am just asking.

We really need to take this disease seriously and put aside our political convictions. More and more Grenadians will become affected, possibly repeatedly. That would slow economic activity to a crawl and create more hardships. For example, I heard the MNIB may have to close because of this illness. If things like that happen on a widespread basis, we have an Ebola like situation developing in Grenada. Individuals and the government need to intervene. I always think Grenville was too dirty. Can the authorities place garbage cans in strategic places so people can drop their refuse in, and not on the streets and in drains.

years ago there was a worker in Ford named Mr Pye who operated and cleaned the streets with a donkey cart, and he cleaned up Grenville every morning and the place was clean, he cleaned under the drains next to the entrance to the market, there were no large cardboard or garbage boxes under the buildings in the drains and that was Uncle's goverment. Today Keith Mitchel's goverment can't even clean the streets much less the drains but he can do something after all, he put us into big debts. Grenada you voted for him, now deal with the case.

Now i am seriously concerned by the present attitude of this this Keith Mitchell Government and it begs to belief that this is the same bunch of Hypocrites who came into power on the back of bloody lies and deceit of our unsuspected voters last election, yes this is the same lot who promise us that better days will be here under their stewardship compared to that of the last Government of the NDC, but no sooner they return into the power seats ,they are back nasty ways and it is business asual with their mischief making, take for example this idea of fining residents for mosquito breading now what the hell is this Minister talking about for one just have to look aroung our drainage system in grenada especially in places like St Andrews that drainage by Gittens Chemist, and the town of St.George between shipwreck shop and Digicel and the dead water that has been present for some time these areas is filty ,so Mr Worme please take a look at the players in your department and ask yourself what the hell are they being paid to do, instead of heaping more taxes on to an already overburden Grenadian tax payers, Mr Worme when i was a boy growing up in grenada there was always mosquitoes and it was the practice norm for that section of government that is responsible for the peoples health to visit Parishes to clean and SPRAY these swampy areas while encouraging residents to do as much as they can to assist, but to revert to fining none compliance residents is in my view a backward step knowing the financial pressure our people is currently undergoing under this deceitful Government who came to power promising to deliver ,but since taking ofice it has been nothing but pressure, with the delivery train slow in coming to RESCUE of our people as was promise before and during the last election ,now your Government is threatening to fine resident for habouring or doing nothing to erradicate the breading of these Mosquitos ,Lol.

Hi Grenadians, I live in the UK but am of Grenadian parentage. I have been monitoring the Virus and it's spread as both my Parents, family members and friends have been affected. What the hell is the Government holding back for!!! Spray the dam place and get rid of this Mosquito for god sake man. It's just mosquitoes ... not a army of invading solders. Everyday another friend tells me he or she has the virus and how painful and disabling it is. Come on Grenada..! We love you.I too have witnessed the need for more clean up program's.. If u want to charge the public. Clean the drains, streets and market places and then charge for littering.

Growing up in GRENADA in the country the goverment used to have people spraying the swampy areas. Its the goverment responsiblity. So stop threatening the people and do your job spray the damn place and clean up the drains in Grenville and around the country. If you do you part the public will follow

Gabe, you not only spoke but preach.Grenadians open up your eyes and take notes. In psychiatry this is referred to as transference, how the hell you gonna prosecute the public for that which you the government is responsible for.Instead of calling it the "Isle of Spice" it should be called the "Isle of spite".This government is nothing but JOKES,REAL-JOKES.
