PLANS FOR INAUGURAL HERITAGE MONTH UNDERWAY
A travelling photo exhibition through every parish, including Carriacou, is a major highlight of the first Heritage Month, which will be observed in April. Last year, Cabinet approved April as Heritage Month, to coincide with World Heritage Day on April 18. Culture Minister, Sen. Brenda Hood says the month will emphasize the importance of Grenadian heritage, especially to the nation’s youth. “I am very proud as Minister that we are able to do this. Our heritage is so rich and so strong that I believe that so many of our people are not aware of it,” Minister Hood said. The Minister said her ministry is currently engaging the private sector in order to involve privately-owned historic sites in the activity. “We are asking the owners to open them up to the public…we will be informed as to the days when persons can go out to visit them,” she said. Thomas Matthew, Chief Cultural Officer and Chairman of the National Heritage Committee says the focus of the first year will be on public awareness. “We will have weekly talk programmes and daily infomercials sensitizing people about our heritage and why it is so important. We will also highlight some of the significant historical landmarks in Grenada that people pass by every day without recognizing their significance,” Mr. Matthew said. The theme of the first Heritage Month is “Remembering Our Ancestors, Our Fortifications and Our Historic Natural Coastal Heritage”. All are invited to participate in the observance that will mark the beginning of protecting our heritage. Source: gov.gd
