GRENADA LAUNCHES LONG TERM DEVELOPMENT PLAN
A long-term plan of action to achieve government’s development goals was launched at the Grenada Trade Centre recently. The 2030 National Plan is expected to be completed and presented to cabinet by June 2016 and will soon be tabled in parliament for approval and action. A secretariat will be set up that will provide support to a steering committee and a technical working group which is responsible for creating the plan. Members of the committee and group were presented during Wednesday’s launch. Dr. Patrick Antoine of the technical working group says this is a serious process and nothing but the fullest commitment from committee members will be accepted. ” We have to be dedicated to this. We have to have a spirit of collective progress,” said Dr. Antoine. “I think when we have a situation with working groups with 15 and 20 people but two people do the work it’s unfair and I want to caution against that. If you are going to be part of it contribute to it”. Meantime Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell is hoping the National Plan 2030 can outline a roadmap to sustained prosperity for Grenada. Among others, he says, the plan must include strategies for achieving sustainable and equitable development, sound fiscal management and sustainability, manageable debt and a smaller and efficient government, as well as private sector led growth and a world class tourism product. “Continued innovation and the upgrading of agriculture. Efficient light manufacturing sector .High quality market demand driven technical and vocational skills,” said Dr. Mitchell as he hammered out highlights of the plan. “Lifelong learning for all citizens .High wage employment .Vibrant innovation, knowledge accumulation and dissemination. Green businesses, industries and lifestyles. A highly productive and internationally competitive export sector and a sustainable mix of traditional and renewable energy”. Dr. Mitchell also believes the 2030 document should address ways of unleashing the entrepreneurial spirit of citizens especially the youth. Meanwhile Economic Development Minister Oliver Joseph is confident that the proposed National Plan 2030 will enable government to build it’s much talked about new economy once it is developed. Minister Joseph, who also chairs the steering committee responsible for creating the 2030 plan, says it will also incorporate regional and sub-regional plans. This in an effort to ensure Grenada conforms to the developmental visions of groupings like the OECS and CARICOM. “Development partners, strategic plans and policies will also be taken into consideration,” Minister Joseph said. “Grenada’s commitment to international treaty’s and conventions, as well as global trends, risks, challenges and opportunities will all be considered”.
