There was disappointment for the Caribbean Wednesday as Olympic champion Kirani James failed in his bid to win the men’s 400 metres, as South African Wayde Van Niekerk produced an upset to take gold at the IAAF World Championships.
Grenadian James, one of the heavy favourites to take his second World title, was forced to settle for bronze in a season-best 43.78 seconds, with Van Niekerk storming to a world-leading 43.48.
Defending World champion, Lawshawn Merritt of the United States, took silver in a personal best 43.65.
Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic set a national record of 44.11 in finishing fourth with Machel Cedenio of Trinidad and Tobago 45.06 for seventh.
