MYSTERY OF INFANT DEATHS IN GRENADA DEEPENS
Following a recent claim by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Grenada that three young children had died at the General Hospital, reportedly from gastroenteritis, and a denial by the ministry of health, a local radio talk show host has since interviewed two of the families whose children died. Talk show host Kem Jones said that, not only did the two families interviewed confirm the reports, but while on air a relative of another young victim called in to confirm the third reported death. In a press statement last week, the NDC called for the immediate resignation or dismissal of the minister for health, Nickolas Steele. However, according to the government, one infant/toddler (and not three babies as claimed by the NDC and apparently now confirmed by Jones) died on the weekend in question after being cared for at the General Hospital for a period of three days. An autopsy to ascertain the exact cause of death of the infant has been undertaken and the revived Death Review Committee met to determine the circumstances and events surrounding the untimely passing of the infant at the hospital. Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the digestive tract that results in vomiting, diarrhea, or both and is sometimes accompanied by fever or abdominal cramps, which can lead to dehydration. It is usually caused by a viral bacterial or parasitic infection. It refers to inflammation of the stomach and intestines that causes vomiting and diarrhea. Gastroenteritis can cause fatal dehydration, especially in young children and babies. Source: Caribbean News Now
