CRUISE SHIP FROM MIAMI ARRIVES IN HAVANA ON HISTORIC TR...
As passengers cheered, Carnival Corp.’s Fathom Adonia arrived at Havana harbor on Monday morning, officially reestablishing the U.S. cruise business in Cuba. The voyage of the Adonia, with about 600 passengers aboard, was the first trip from Miami to Cuba in more than 50 years, and the importance of the historic trip wasn’t lost on anyone. Aboard the ship, cruise passengers waved Cuban and American flags. In the Old Havana terminal, Cuban flags and banners from Havantur, the official tourism agency, were draped along the second-floor balcony as a crowd of officials, port workers and media welcomed the vessel. The ship is scheduled to dock at Havana harbour for two days and follow on to visit the ports of Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba. Carnival’s spokesperson Roger Frizzell told reporters that this would be a traditional sightseeing tour, where cruise passengers will enjoy the landscapes, meet the people and take a look around. They can also enjoy a trip in a 1950 vintage car to a show and a disco, arranged with Cuba’s Havanatur travel agency. No beach tours will be allowed, since American law bans US citizens from engaging in tourism in Cuba and the beach is considered a leisure activity not included in the 12 categories authorized for US citizens to visit the island. The Adonia will return to Miami on May 8, while the Cuba cruise schedule sets visits every two weeks. Sources: caribbeannewsnow and herald
