REFLECTIONS ON RIO
click
Well, the 2016 Summer Olympic Games have come and gone, and despite the alarmist predictions (The stadiums will not be finished in time! Everyone will get Zika! Rio is a mess and unsanitary!) the premier sporting event seems to have been successful from all accounts. The thousands of athletes from around the world who competed in the Games certainly thought so. Although the outcome of the 400 meters race was not all we would have hoped for, Grenadians everywhere are extremely proud of our own Kirani James and Bralon Taplin who represented for the Spice Isle in the finals. With news that the newly built athletic stadium is to be named after James, who won the island’s first Olympic gold and silver medals, many think this a fitting tribute for the man nicknamed “Jaguar”. But what about the other Kirani Jameses waiting in the wings? What is our country doing to nurture and encourage the talented youth among us? How are we making sure the next outstanding track star, football player, cricketer can make his or her mark? Do we even recognize when our youngsters show promise in a certain area and help them fulfill their potential? Yes, the cream of the crop will rise to the top despite the challenges, but as a nation we should be able to do more than just give lip service to our present & future champions
