GRENADA PM DRAWS FLAK OVER INSENSITIVE COMMENTS
An opposition legislator has criticised Prime Minister Keith Mitchell over his choice of words used in the Parliament recently as Grenadians continue to discuss the October 27 referendum on changing the island’s constitution. Ray Roberts, who represents trade unions in the Senate, said that Prime Minister Mitchell’s comments in the Parliament last Friday were “regrettable”, as he criticised two members of the disabled community who have been urging Grenadians to vote no in the referendum. Roberts, who is considered a member of Grenada’s disabled community, has been urging voters to cast a negative ballot to several of the measures to be considered in the referendum that includes replacing the London-based Privy Council with the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as the island’s final court. Grenadians are also being called upon to vote on bills that include one that changes the name of the State from ‘Grenada’ to ‘Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique’ while the others would institute term limits for the prime minister; ensure that there is always an opposition leader; enable parliament to provide fixed dates for general elections; institute an elections and boundaries commission; introduce the modern styling ‘Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court’; and require that allegiance be sworn, no longer to the Queen, but to Grenada Roberts, however, has sought to make it clear that his position is not reflective of that of the trade unions. In his statement, he said he was also condemning the position adopted by government legislators who laughed and cheered when the prime minister made his statement. “Personally, I am not offended by the utterances of our Prime Minister and the reaction of his colleague Parliamentarians; however, between Friday and today I have received in excess of a hundred calls from people of all walks of life expressing grave concern about the seemingly derogatory comments made by our distinguished Leader and highlighted in the media. “As our Leader, his public statement does not help nor encourage the weaker minds in the physically challenged community to grow in strength and courage, and neither does it help the work of the Grenada National Council of the Disabled in its challenge to integrate all people,” Robert said. He said Prime Minister Mitchell has the intellect and capacity to be more selective in his choice of words when taking issue with views he does not agree with. “I trust that we shall not have a repeat in our House of Representatives,” he added. GRENADA PM DRAWS FLAK OVER INSENSITIVE COMMENTS
The Observer wishes to object to the response of Gabe relevant to PM Mitchell "talking down" to Grenadian. Unfortunately, some of our country men and women do not repond too well when spoken to respectfully and professionally. Therefore, the PM will only get their attention when he reverts to addressing them harshly. When spoken to in a mellow and generally acceptable to new, they will accuse him of being soft and out of character. Didn't many of you criticize the former NDC PM as being too soft and weak because of his soft and mellow response/address to certain 'issues?

Now some level headed person may ask as to the comments quote made by our prime minister recently and it is right to ask as to what has change in terms of manners of this man where our prime minister is concern when addressing any issues to do with grenada and grenadians, for this prime minister has a long history of talking down to Grenadians especially sad to say for a man who it is said is a past and scholor and Teacher of a highly acclaimed university in America yet speaks to grenadians like he is a street fighter even in parliament. So no change here,it is sometime said that a country gets the government and a leader that it deserved .
