MDC EX-STUDENTS ASSOCIATION TO THE RESCUE
Marli, St. Patrick _ On Thursday September 8, 2016, the Technical Department of Mac Donald College received some much needed supplies and equipment from the Mac Donald College Ex-students Association, New York Chapter. Electronics and Clothing and Textile are the subject areas that would benefit directly from this most recent donation from the association. The donation to the school was made partly in response to a request from the principal, Miss Lorraine De Allie. According to her, when the technical wing was handed over to the school by the Ministry of Education on November 19, 2015, it was a shell as it was practically unfurnished and lacked supplies and equipment needed for the teaching and learning of the new technical subjects which were introduced in the previous school year. After liaising with the president of the association, Mr. Lazarus Antoine, the association decided to make the equipping of the Electronics and Clothing and Textiles laboratories its annual project. Using a list generated from the CXC CSEC syllabi for the technical subjects, the association identified the items to be donated to the school. The bulk of the items donated were for the Clothing and Textiles laboratory. Among the items received were a washer, a dryer, irons, ironing board, sewing machines, a surger and mannequins. Items for the electronics laboratory include an assortment of screw drivers, digital and analog multi-meters and soldering irons. Head of the Technical Department, Mr. Michael Paul expressed gratitude for the donation. He is extremely happy as he believes that the teachers would be more effective in their delivery of the subject material. Similar sentiments were echoed by principal, Miss De Allie who is very grateful for the generous contribution of the association. Miss De Allie would like to thank the association for its timely donation and asserts that the items received will go a long way in assisting the students in their pursuit of these subjects, especially those in form four, as they would be writing the CSEC examination in less than two years. She notes that some of the items that the students would be utilising are exclusive to Mac Donald College as no other secondary school in Grenada can boast of having such state of the art equipment. This, Miss De Allie believe, would not only enable the students to attain success at the CSEC level, but would also enable them to be more adequately prepared for the job market and the next level, should they decide to further their studies in those areas. This is not the first time that the association has donated to Mac Donald College. Since its establishment in September 2005 by a group of Mac Donald College alumni, the Mac Donald College Ex-students Association, New York Chapter has made significant donations to the school including a commercial lawn mower and funds for its maintenance, a students’ special needs fund, gym equipment, office equipment, scholarship programme including the Donald Taylor Science Award and a jumping pad. The association continues to work very closely with school principal Miss Lorraine De Allie to enhance teaching and learning at Mac Donald College and ultimately develop it into a state of the art secondary school.
