In life we are guaranteed one thing when we are born it is to pass away.
And in between that time from the Day we are born to the day we die
we are granted an opportunity to fill our life with meaning. When our
life is complete it is represented by our name, the date we were born, A
DASH and the date that our life is complete. When you write that
down, the date one was created and the date that one leaves, the most
significant part of that is actually the Dash. The Dash symbolizes the life
that a person has lived and my Grandfather Jerome Bullen lived an
incredible dash. Born with the name Jerome Bullen he was the 3 rd of 7
Children to his Parents Charles Buckmire & Beryl Bullen. He also was
known to many by another name which is Tarzan or Tazzo. Caribbean’s
love their nicknames. I’m not quite sure how he got such a name maybe
it was dashing good looks and strong physique, maybe it was the way
he danced or would play the Congo drums, or perhaps it was the ability
to fix virtually anything and how strong he was, Or maybe it was just all
of these things and so much more. It could be perhaps just a silly story
of him climbing a tree to pick some fruit and somebody say “boy
Jerome you climb up that tree like Tarzan man” and it just caught on.
Whatever it was the name fits him.
I loved my grandfather and he loved me even when he was frustrated
with me. We lived a large part of my adult life together he was a simple
person to live with most days. I at times was a bit much for him with my
energy and enthusiasm for fun. He would call it being loud and
inconsiderate and would then consult my mother and she would tell
me she knew what was coming when he started the conversation with
“Tell your Son…” There were times when I would think why not just
come to me and tell me instead of involving my mother? Then I would
remember it’s probably because if he said something to me, he would
end up busting up my a**. My grandfather loved life and loved people
he would help numerous folks, but none more than his daughter Sonia I
watched, learned and observed how my Grandfather would move
Heaven and Earth for his Daughter and would do things at the drop of a
hat. Whether it was to go get something, fix something, or show up to
something. If you want to see what a pillar of support looks like then
just take a look at the way my grandfather SHOWED UP in life. Many
people who have gotten to know Jerome Bullen and experience his
magic knows what I’m talking about. Grandpa Jerome was a shining
example of what a MAN is. Which is a father, a grandfather, a friend, a
person with integrity, a person with honor and honesty, a person who
loved a good laugh and loved to party, a person who makes no excuse
for who is, and a person who is able to grow and learn from his flaws
and most importantly my grandfather showed me and showed all of us
that a MAN is a person who LOVES! Thank you, Grandpa Jerome, for
the love you have given me and everyone you have touched. We will
miss you and you always will be remembered.
